There seems to be two major threats to Cassowaries that direct action can impact upon to reduce and eventually eliminate these threats. I would like to know what needs to be done and how?
a) Domestic Dogs - its appalling that this happens in the first place! Surely there are local council regulations about peoples dogs roaming unleashed. If there are regulations , how come they're ineffective. What do you think needs to be done? Is it a lack of funding to have enough Council Rangers or Dog catchers? Are people fined if their dogs are caught roaming unattended? Theres is something in this area that is ineffective and needs to be addressed.
b) Ferral Pigs. They need to be eliminated. Whats being done or not done? How can this be actioned to start having a very effective process in place to get rid of these destructive and useless pigs?
Im willing to work on these two areas however I don't know where to start and Id really appreciate assistance from anyone with information and time to combine our efforts.

So much we don't know about these ancient dinosaur relics, and I can state with just about absolute certainty that anyone who studies them, won't be given the opportunity to study them for much longer. If the cassowary still exists in your great grand children's lifetime, now that would be bonus. However, despite that fact that these birds have been around for millennia, time is running out for these majestic birds. Man has encroached too far, with land clearing, along with car fatalities, and indiscriminate killing by his lethal pets - dogs. Alongside the fact that environmental factors contribute to their decline, as in cyclones that de-forest their habitat, and remove their food sources, the cassowary is facing extinction. Are you doing all you can to change this? What else could you do, to ensure the perpetuation of the species? Share the awareness of the plight of these truly ancient relics, and ensure that, 3 generations from now, these vital chains in the health of the rainforest, are thriving. Will you?

I live in Tully North Queensland and have seen many Cassowaries with and without chicks when I drive to Mission Beach. I am very concerned and saddened by what I have heard recently regarding the Rehabilitation Centre at Garner's Beach. These are my areas of concern: 1} That there is currently no rehabilitation service for injured adult cassowaries resulting in the recent euthanasia of a bird that our local vet felt could have been rehabilitated if given access to the Rehab. Centre. 2) Reduction in services at the Rehab Centre due to lack of funding. 3} Lack of a public awareness campaign regarding these issues until our local vet went public. 3} No mention of these issues on your website, one would think everything was wonderful unless you know differently. Please explain.
