Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Participating Zoos

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (nee Currumbin Bird Sanctuary) has been an iconic attraction on the Gold Coast since its humble beginnings in 1947.  ‘The Sanctuary’ as it is known by locals has grown with the Gold Coast into a multi-faceted attraction including iconic Aussie critters, high rope adventures and one of the largest community animal hospitals in Queensland.

The Sanctuary is proud to care for over 30 threatened species including the majestic southern cassowary.  Our current birds ‘Cass’ and ‘Troppo’ are in their 20’s and although they are no longer breeding, they are still as charismatic as the day they arrived.

This year Currumbin Sanctuary will be supporting Rainforest Rescue and the Save the Cassowary campaign by celebrating the cassowary on Fathers Day.  We all know how much work it is to rear kids, well spare a thought for the male cassowary who does it all on his lonesome.  In honour of all the dedicated fathers out there both feathered and non-feathered, we will be issuing all fathers with a ‘cassowary pack’ that will include educational material, fun kids stuff and some freebies!
