Rockhampton Zoo was founded in 1924 as a small menagerie within the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens. In keeping with current trends of conservation and education, we are working towards becoming the ‘forest zoo’, concentrating on three major habitats:
- Exotic tropical rainforests
- Australian rainforests
- Australian dry eucalypt forest
We aim to educate about the importance of these habitats with a focus on flora and fauna. The Australian rainforest is represented by Queensland endangered species including the Northern Quoll, Mahogany Gliders and the iconic Southern Cassowary. Our new cassowary home was constructed ‘within a rainforest’ in 2011. Our breeding program has been successful and a number have been transferred to other zoos.
Rockhampton Zoo is pleased and proud to be a supporter of Rainforest Rescue’s Save the Cassowary campaign.
